Contacts cleaner

Drop in the contacts you exported from your phone or mail app. You get back one clean file: duplicates merged, empty cards removed, and anything uncertain held back for you to decide. It all happens in this page; nothing is uploaded.

You can choose several files, for example an old export and your phone's own contacts, and they are combined. On an iPhone: Contacts → Lists → press and hold a list → Export.

What it does

  • Merges duplicates that share an email address or phone number and whose names agree ("Ben Stone" and "Benjamin Stone"). The fullest card is kept and the others' emails and phones are added to it.
  • Holds back look-alikes for you: different names on one shared email or phone (often two people at the same company) and the same name with nothing else in common. Shared addresses such as info@ or office@ never link two cards on their own.
  • Removes empty cards: no name, no phone and no organisation. These are usually addresses your mail app saved by itself. A card with a phone number or a company name is kept, even without a name.

Before you import the result

  • Keep your original export. Check the cleaned file before you replace anything.
  • Import it into an empty address book. If you sync contacts to a phone, clear the phone's local contacts before adding the sync account, never after, or deletions can travel back to the server.

The full story, including the mistake that deleted 431 real contacts, is in Clean up your address book without Google or iCloud.
